Time and holidays in Singapore
Singapore keeps Singapore Standard Time, eight hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time at UTC+8, and does not observe daylight saving, so the clock is the same all year. Interestingly, the city-state sits geographically further west than its UTC+8 offset would suggest, having aligned its time with the rest of the region decades ago for the sake of trade and coordination, which is why its sunrise and sunset times feel a little late for its longitude.
A calendar that mirrors a multicultural nation
Few countries express their diversity through holidays as clearly as Singapore. Its public holidays deliberately span the major communities that make up the population, so the year includes Chinese New Year, the Muslim festivals of Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji, the Buddhist Vesak Day, the Hindu festival of Deepavali, and the Christian holidays of Good Friday and Christmas, alongside the secular New Year's Day, Labour Day and National Day. National Day on the ninth of August marks independence in 1965 and is celebrated with a spectacular parade and fireworks over Marina Bay. Because many of these festivals follow lunar calendars, their Gregorian dates shift from year to year and are confirmed closer to the time. The live clock above shows the current Singapore time, which stays fixed at UTC+8 throughout the year.
